The membrane surrounding the brain and the spinal cord is called Meninges. The tumour arising from this membrance is called Meningioma. This is the most common type of tumour which grows slowly in the head and therefore may not cause any symptoms for many years. Once it grows big in size then it starts compressing the brain, nerves and vessels and the symptoms appear. The symptoms appear very gradually and increase with the passage of time as the tumour grows bigger.

The symptoms of meningioma may include blurred or double vision, morning headache, ringing sound in the ears, memory and smell loss, seizures, weakness in limbs and speaking problems. Meningioma is mostly a benign tumour and does not spread to other parts of the body. Since the symptoms appear gradually, they may be mistaken as normal aging process.

Our neurosurgeon will do a thorough physical and neurological examination followed by Contrast enhanced studies of the brain on CT Scan and MRI. Since meningiomas could be very small they may get missed on plain imaging. If the meningioma is small and the symptoms are not severe then a wait and watch approach may be adopted. You will have to remain in followup with the neurosurgeon so that periodic assessment of the growth of meningioma can be made.

If the symptoms are moderate or severe then surgical removal of the tumour is the best option. Our neurosurgeons will remove most of the tumour without damaging the nearby healthy tissue. The tissue which has been removed is sent for biopsy and if the tumour turns out to be malignant then radiation is given to destroy the residual tumour. However if the tumour is benign then no further treatment after surgery is needed. You will still have to be under the observation of the neurosurgeon for periodic assessment at 6 months interval.
