Epilepsy is a neurological disorder in which the brain activity becomes abnormal and the person suffers from sudden seizures, stiffening of the body, loss of awareness and unusual behaviour. A single seizure is not necessarily epilepsy. Two or more unexplained seizures leads you towards the diagnosis of epilepsy. In such cases one must immediately consult a neuro specialist. Our neurosurgeon will do a thorough physical examination and follow it with EEG Test and MRI Brain with Epilepsy protocol. These tests are sufficient to make a confirmed diagnosis about epilepsy.

Epilepsy or `Mirgi' as it is called in India, mostly affects young children and older adults. Family history of epilepsy increases the chances of a person having seizures. Head injuries, stroke, dementia and brain infections can also lead to epileptic seizures. Some patients can even die during an epileptic seizure.

Electro-encephalogram (EEG) is the most common test used for the diagnosis of epilepsy. In this test electrodes are attached to the head using a gel like paste. The electrical activity of the brain is measured by the machine. The results of EEG are interpreted by a Neurologist. Other investigations like CT Scan, MRI Scan or PET Scan are also used in some cases to find out the area where the seizures are originating.

The treatment for epilepsy is done through the use of medicines and in very cases, surgery is needed. These medicines have to be taken everyday for a long period of time and can be discontinued only on the advice of your doctor if you have not experienced any seizures for atleast 2 years. Since the medicines have to be taken for a long period of time, your doctor will try to give just the appropriate dosage of the medicine which is sufficient to control the seizures. Setting the appropriate dosage may take time and you may have to come for consultation several times before this goal is achieved.

There are many quacks in India who also claim to treat epilepsy but the correct approach would be to consult a neuro specialist. The department of neurosciences at Max Hospital is equipped with the technology and the manpower to offer you a comprehensive solution for epilepsy.

The cost of diagnostic tests for epilepsy would be in the range of USD 1000 - 1200 while the cost of medications is not even USD 50 per month. If surgery is required for the treatment of epilepsy then the cost would be USD 6000 -8000 depending upon the age and general health of the patient. The treatment cost also depends on the category of room chosen for your stay in the hospital. The cost is lower in ward and shared room while the cost goes higher in a Single room. Our patient care executives will provide end to end assistance for all your needs while you are in India for medical treatment.
